Saturday, October 13th, 2018, was an important day in the development of smart grids, aiming for a cleaner, safer and more resilient electrical system. The SENSIBLE Project is in its final stage of demonstration and has reached the culmination of the actual demonstration of the various use cases, reaching this important milestone with the demonstration of the most ambitious use case. This UC allows low and medium voltage networks to be operated on islanding through energy storage systems and their intelligent operation during emergency situations. These advanced functionalities have applications in situations of extreme events, such as climatic events in which the networks are in a disturbed regime, thus being able to be guarante supply to “energetic islands” ensuring greater resilience and improvement of the supply quality of service.
With duly coordinated actions from the Dispatch Centre in Lisbon, with the strong support of the teams in Évora and Valverde, EDP, Siemens and INESC TEC carried out the demonstration of this functionality. The demonstration began with the opening of a circuit breaker the 15 kV network level (Medium Voltage), allowing the isolation of the main MV network, and then medium and low voltage storage systems were managed in an integrated manner by intelligent dispatch developed in the SENSIBLE, resorting, when necessary, to the flexibility of the clients, with the objective of maximizing the island’s operation time, which included a MV client and two public Secondary Substations, until the MV network recovers stability. The demonstration occurred during 35 minutes. Valverde (located in Évora) currently has an MV Energy Storage System from EDP Distribuição ( 480kW / 360 kWh) and four LV Energy Storage Systems installed by the SENSIBLE ( total of 130 kW / 180 kWh), as well as an advanced secondary substation . There are also 25 houses equipped with PV-1,5kWp systems. From those 25 houses,10 have 3.3kWh batteries, 10 have 2kW heaters and 5 have both equipment, being all the equipment managed by a residential energy management system developed in the project, which allows to optimize consumption and provide flexibility for the distribution network through the coordination with algorithms of technical management of the network also developed in the project.
SENSIBLE is an H2020 project that aims at demonstrating distributed energy storage systems applied to buildings, communities and distribution networks, in which the EDP Group is represented by EDP Labelec / NEW R & D and EDP Distribuição and leads the demonstration activities. The project has an overall budget of around € 15 million, starting in January 2015 and ending at the end of 2018. From a technological point of view, Siemens has contributed to the development of revolutionary protection and automation mechanisms, while INESC TEC was the academic partner responsible for the development of the algorithm for dispatching storage systems (at LV and MV level)
Previously SENSIBLE had already demonstrated low-voltage island operation through the optimal dispatch of grid energy storage systems and through the flexibility of residential customers. Another use case that allows us to value the energy flexibility of customers in energy markets has also been demonstrated, pointing to important increases in efficiency in consumption.
