Our competences

Our team has a broad knowledge in the energy sector:

  • Strong background in key areas of engineering as well as in management and business administration
  • State-of-the-art knowledge and experience in hydro, thermal and renewable energy technologies and energy markets
  • Skilled personnel in both laboratory and engineering functions
  • Extensive experience in project development and execution, operation and management
  • Leadership in innovation in smart grids, not only in terms of technology but also implementation and management

On the other hand we have distinctive infrastructures:

  • Asset basis which includes a diversified generation portfolio comprising conventional and renewable, with an overall installed capacity of 22 GW, generating 60.2TWh in 2014, of which 72% comes from wind and hydro plants.
  • Distribution grid with Smart Grid deployment through a smart grid project called InovGrid. It was first deployed in the municipality of Évora (EDP’s Inovcity) in 2010 and it has been extended to other cities across Portugal.
  • Laboratorial infrastructure facilities, where consulting/ testing services in the field of electricity (from production to consumption, energy transport, energy distribution, energy efficiency, renewable energies, metering / smart metering, etc.) are performed.

NEW R&D also draws on anchor partnerships with Portuguese/European and Chinese Universities and R&D Centres. Further partnerships with top tier academic actors are pursued on an on-going basis.

As we embrace further challenges and consolidate NEW’s position within the energy sector worldwide, we expect to increase our team and expanding our competences.

    Key competences: Executive Management in R&D and Innovation in the Energy Sector; Leadership in European Funded R&D Projects; Expertise in Clean and Flexible Generation, Energy Storage and Energy Management and Smart Grids; 14 years of experience in the energy sector.

    Education: MSc Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering – Specialization areas: Power Systems and automation and control (Instituto Superior Técnico-Universidade Técnica de Lisboa).

    Key competences: Expertise as field engineer, maintenance engineer, contract manager and project manager in Thermal generation power plants; Expertise in asset management and reliability engineering; Management in R&D projects in the areas of power distribution systems; Expertise in Energy Storage, Energy Management and Clean and Flexible Generation.

  • About

    Education: MSc Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering – Major: Power Systems (Technical University of Lisbon).

    Key competences: Project Management in R&D projects in the areas of Energy Storage, Energy Management and Smart Grids. Experience in the areas of MV/HV Grid Maintenance, Maintenance Planning and Asset Management. Background of Grid Design and Modelling and Renewable Energy Sources Modelling and Behavioral Simulation.

  • About

    Education: MSc Degree in Physics Engineering (Technical University of Lisbon); Sustainable Energy System PhD Candidate (MIT Portugal/ Technical University of Lisbon).

    Key competences: Project Management in R&D projects in areas of Energy Efficiency; Management of National and European Funded Projects; Skills in renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric mobility and smart cities.

    Education: MSc Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering – Major: Power Systems, Minor: Electronics (Lisbon University).

    Key competences: Experience as field engineer, maintenance engineer in Thermal generation power plants. Knowledge in Economics and Energy Markets, Power Systems and Power Electronics.

    Education: Double Msc Degree in Aerospace Engineering – Major: Flight Dynamics & Control and Avionics (Technical University of Delft and Technical University of Lisbon).

    Key competences: Experience as Distribution Grid Automation Engineer and Research & Development Engineer. Knowledge in Distribution Grid Automation, Control Theory, Process Optimization and System Estimation.

  • About

    Education: Degree in Port,Waterway and Coastal Engineering (Southeast University, China).

    Key competences: Background in port and coastal engineering. Experience in both Structural and Geotechnical design. 6 years of experience in the wind energy sector.

  • About

    Education: Degree in Electrical Engineering – Power Systems from Lisbon Technical University; MBA from IAE Paris - Sorbonne Business School.

    Key competences: Vast international experience in innovation and R&D project management in the Energy Sector; Expertise in Demand Response, Flexibility Aggregation, Energy Storage, Energy Management and Smart Grids; 12 years of experience in the Energy Sector.

  • About

    Education: MSc Degree in Electrical and Computers Engineering – major in Energy and specialization in Renewable Energies (Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto).

    Key competences: Experience as power system automation engineer and in SCADA configuration. Knowledge in Electrical Power Systems, Energy Markets and Wind Power Production.

    Education: MSc Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering – Major: Power Systems, Minor: Systems, Decision and Control (Lisbon University).

    Key competences: Experience in Power Quality project management and in consulting for Power Systems management. Knowledge in Electricity Networks, Power Electronics and Electrical Machines.

    Key competences: Experience as E&P project engineer. International experience in project management in the Energy Sector. Knowledge in Energy Systems, R&D projects, Energy and O&G consulting services.

    Key competences: Academic R&D and Teaching, Industrial Process Information Systems, Wind Energy Resource Forecast, Commissioning on Command and Control Systems for Power Plants; 16 years of experience in Energy sector.
